Here at Pharmacy Purchasing & Products we often preach taking a multidisciplinary approach to solving challenges in pharmacy or ensuring the smooth implementation of new technology. This month we are practicing what we preach by bringing you the perspectives of a variety of health care experts. From an accreditation specialist and a cancer center nurse to a director of revenue integrity and an AIDC expert, our authors share their unique approaches to problems commonly faced in pharmacy. In addition, Darryl Rich, a surveyor for The Joint Commission, underscores how a pharmacy-only anticoagulation program is destined to fail. From implementing a smart pump system to changing the way you capture revenue, our authors have one message in common: no pharmacy is an island.

We also would like to take this opportunity to congratulate The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Bar Code Resource Office (BCRO) on receiving a prestigious Institute for Safe Medicine Practices (ISMP) Cheers Award for 2009. The award honors individuals, organizations, companies, and agencies that have, through their actions during the previous year, set a superlative standard of excellence for others to follow in the prevention of medication errors and other adverse events. The awards reception will be held the evening of December 8th during the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting. You can read more about the VHA BCRO’s approach to bar coding in PP&P’s October and May issues of this year.

All the best,
