Health systems continue to embrace the value proposition offered by operating specialty pharmacies, with the upward trend of implementations projected to continue over time. Health system specialty pharmacies are increasingly likely to permit white bagging, although most continue to hold the line against brown bagging. Despite the increase in white bagging, it is quite rare that additional reimbursement is negotiated to account for the phamacy’s associated uptick in responsibilities.
Adoption rates for specialty pharmacies continue to trend upward. From 2017 to this year, the number of health systems with a specialty pharmacy has doubled.
Pharmacy’s commitment to certified specialty pharmacy continues to trend upward. Large teaching facilities currently lead this effort as 65% of all facilities with 400+ beds currently operate a specialty pharmacy.
Looking forward, pharmacy leaders in mid- to large-sized facilities have a strong interest in offering specialty pharmacy services. It is particularly notable that half of all 400+ bed facilities currently without a specialty pharmacy are considering implementing one.
