The ability to consistently source generics in bar coded unit dose remains quite challenging as just 24% of facilities are able to purchase more than 90% of their generics in this format. This results in additional costs, off-contract purchasing, and ongoing repackaging operation investments.

Recognizing the amount of work required to manage product changes and the potential patient safety risks that result from medication shortages, the willingness to pay a higher price for a generic in order to ensure a consistently reliable supply is nearly universal: 89% of facilities make purchasing decisions under this approach.

While 93% of facilities engage in off-contract purchasing, it typically encompasses no more than 10% of all generic purchases.

The vast majority of off-contract purchasing is driven by product availability, although unit dose availability and pricing does drive some of these purchases.
