Benchmarking data enables pharmacy leadership to pinpoint technology gaps and make compelling arguments for expansions and upgrades. This is where the true benefits of this issue’s State of Pharmacy Automation survey results are realized. Pharmacy directors across the country, in hospitals of all sizes, know well what many of their highest-level administrators may be missing: To compete in today’s health care market, pharmacy operations must be acknowledged as elemental to safe and effective patient care, and must be supported.

This year marks the 18th anniversary of our annual State of Pharmacy Automation survey, and we are thankful to all the hospital pharmacy leaders who shared their time and experience. Clearly, the power of combined resources is driving, and demanding, ever more advanced and comprehensive instruments, information systems, and services.

Reliance on proven and robust automation technology is essential, as is a continued effort to maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) and best practices. Toward that effort, the data described in the following pages, trending over multiple years and representing a well-refined survey methodology, can be used to compel your facility’s administration to continue supporting positive operational changes to pharmacy systems and processes.

In presenting this year’s data, it is heartening to know that so many hospital pharmacy practitioners truly care about elevating the playing field for each other.

All the best,
