Hazardous Drug Preparation
While many state boards of pharmacy have been inspecting to USP <800> for some time now, the chapter will be officially enforceable on November 1, 2023. This chapter contains 184 must statements and 43 should statements, denoting requirements and recommendations respectively. It is important to note the interconnectivity between the USP chapters: full compliance with <800> requires compliance with <795>, <797>, and any chapters referenced therein.
Expertise in safe handling of HDs is a necessity as the preparation of HDs is now customary in most facilities. More than 8 out of every 10 facilities prepare chemotherapy and/or other HDs in the course of their daily practice.
Outside of the smallest facilities, HD preparation is a commonplace practice.
There is a strong move away from preparing HDs in ambulatory or clinic environments in order to concentrate HD compounding in the HD cleanroom under USP <800> guidelines.
