An increasing number of facilities have implemented a formal environmental monitoring plan. Notably many facilities rely on their certifying company or an outsourced vendor for their monitoring. With the expectation that USP will increase the frequency of monitoring activities, it is important to consider whether it makes sense to develop the in-house expertise necessary to oversee these increased levels of monitoring.


When this survey launched 15 years ago, 71% of facilities managed their own environmental monitoring processes. Today, a majority (52%) rely on either their certifying company or an outsourced services provider to conduct their monitoring.


While the vast majority of facilities include defined action levels in their environmental monitoring plan, just 75% have detailed alert levels that require additional monitoring.
