Assigning the Designated Person role is key to building effective HD handling practices. Note that USP <800> does not define who should fill this role, although certain states take a more proscriptive approach. Consider whether this position should be filled at each facility, if a single person will represent the entire entity, or if a committee approach is best. Be sure to provide training opportunities for this role and consider the utility of working with a consultant to close any knowledge gaps.

While most facilities (71%) have assigned a Dedicated Person to manage all aspects of HD handling, the overall number of facilities with a DP position is declining, indicating that this can be a difficult position to maintain. Notably, some facilities are assigning this role to an HD Committee, rather than a singular individual.

Further improvement is needed in the number of facilities performing an annual review of all HD SOPs, as 32% of facilities have yet to prioritize this.

Creating a job description for the Designated Person role continues to stymie the majority of facilities; just 26% have successfully completed this. Notably, this is a challenge faced by all hospital pharmacies, regardless of facility size.
