This year’s drug spending increases were well supported, and that trend is expected to continue over the next few years with average price increases being appropriately funded. Pharmacy directors typically allot up to half of their drug budget to generic purchasing, and 94% classify their drug budget as adequate or well-funded.
While drug budgets reflect facility size, there is also significant variation in drug expenditures within similarly-sized facilities. For example, while most facilities with 101-200 beds spend up to $10 million per year, a third of these hospitals have drug budgets that exceed $10 million.
