The pressure on hospital pharmacy to accept the practice of white bagging from payers—a practice that can jeopardize patient safety—is ever increasing. In-house specialty pharmacies support supply chain integrity while also promoting the safety benefits of adherence and continuity of care. The adoption rates for this service remained strong even through the pandemic and pharmacy’s commitment to specialty pharmacy is projected to continue expanding.

Despite the challenges of 2020, pharmacy has maintained a strong commitment to establishing specialty pharmacies. Over the past year, there was a 40% increase in the number of hospital pharmacies launching these operations.

While the operation of specialty pharmacies is a majority practice among the largest facilities, adoption rates are significantly lower in smaller facilities.

Looking forward, specialty pharmacy operations are expected to expand significantly, with larger facilities making an especially strong commitment to these operations.
