CSTD adoptions in the pharmacy outpaced those on the nursing units this past year, but the rate of new adoptions is projected to be brisk over the course of this year as most facilities aim to be compliant with USP <800> by the December 1 deadline.
Despite USP <800>’s requirement that CSTDs be used during HD administration by December of this year, CSTD adoptions for administration remained flat this year.
While smaller facilities have been slower to implement CSTDs for drug administration, that disparity is expected to dissipate as facilities of all sizes project adoptions will rise this year in the effort to achieve USP <800> compliance.
CSTD purchases for the nursing units are typically undertaken as a joint effort between pharmacy and nursing. This collaborative effort is particularly common in facilities with 200+ beds.
For drug administration, the leading CSTD vendor is BD, followed by Equashield, ICU Medical, and B. Braun.

Equashield made strong gains this year and is now the leading CSTD for drug administration. BD, ICU Medical, and B. Braun are also commonly chosen for drug administration.
Mirroring the strong user satisfaction assigned to CSTDs used for compounding, pharmacy also rates nursing’s satisfaction with these devices as similarly high.
For those facilities planning to adopt CSTDs for the first time or looking to switch to a different device, BD is the leading vendor under consideration, followed by Equashield, ICU Medical, and B. Braun.
