Category: Automated Medication Storage and Retrieval Systems

BoxPicker from Swisslog Healthcare is a high-density, fully automated, modular storage and retrieval system for hospital pharmacies that aims to streamline workflow and increase medication safety and accuracy. Offering configurable installation within the same footprint, BoxPicker provides storage for bulk medication and supplies and easily expands as the pharmacy system’s needs change and grow, accommodating both ambient and refrigerated storage. The equal weight distribution eliminates the need for additional floor reinforcement.

BoxPicker fully automates the retrieval and verification processes by using robots to multitask. The system also optimizes dispensing speed by queuing the requested medications based on the most efficient delivery order for that specific list of drugs. To increase staff productivity, multiple operator stations are available; with dual access points, one technician can stock medications within the system while a second technician can simultaneously pick patient-specific drugs, complete refills for ADCs, or credit and restock returns.

The system’s secure access ensures inventory control and decreases opportunity for error. The number of medications exposed during dispense is limited, and bar code verification is required, reducing the chances of picking error. Staff safety is increased, as users are not exposed to internal moving parts.

The Beacon Inventory Management System from TCGRx is designed for any size organization, from large integrated networks to single-site locations. Reporting all inventory down to the bottle and pill level, the system provides a full perpetual inventory at a glance. The system includes extensive dashboards and reports that can help reduce inventory-holding costs, manage generic swaps of equivalent medications, and increase inventory turns while reducing outdated products. Combined with high-density storage solutions, all oral solids, boxes, vials, units of use, bulk bottles, and liquids are stored and tracked in a smaller space than traditional shelving. For outpatient pharmacies, adding DeliverRx Will-Call can speed up delivery to patients at the pick-up window, and guarantees patients receive all of their ordered medications.

The new XR2 Automated Central Pharmacy System from Omnicell introduces technology such as industrial robotics and vision systems to deliver a more fully automated approach to medication inventory management. By maximizing the operational efficiency of medication distribution, pharmacy is free to focus on other priorities.

The XR2 is configurable and scalable, easily tailored to meet the needs, fit the available space, and expand to support a wide range of pharmacies, from small to large hospital and IDN environments. The system efficiently supports both cartless and cartfill distribution using unit-dose and multi-dose medication forms and fully automates dispensing and stocking with manufacturer-packaged and/or repackaged medications, utilizing 100% bar code scanning. In addition, it operates unattended, reducing medication handling by technicians and pharmacists and allowing staff to multitask. It stores up to 90% of non-IV and non-narcotic formulary, including slow-moving medications, for unparalleled precision in perpetual inventory management, and increases inventory turns and dispenses soonest-to-expire medications first to reduce expenses associated with waste. With unique workflow design and hardware, it delivers reliability.

CleanRoom Connect from SencorpWhite is a family of advanced vertical carousel systems that help to securely and efficiently store and manage inventory as it enters and leaves the cleanroom environment. CleanRoom provides an ideal portal for a wide range of applications, and its pass-through design with an automatic door on both the clean side and non-clean side prevents cross contamination and maintains cleanroom ratings from Class 100,000 to Class 10. The system allows products to be securely managed, buffered, and transported into and out of the cleanroom. SencorpWhite Genesis inventory management software provides fail-safe inventory access, control, and tracking.

CleanRoom Connect meets FDA GMP/QS regulations for the medical device industry, clinics, research facilities, and manufacturing. It offers efficient storage capacity, reduces anteroom and cleanroom footprint, acts as a secure portal between clean and non-clean areas, and maintains cleanroom integrity by guarding against accidental contamination. In addition, the system can enhance productivity with increased access to products while also improving inventory control, as Genesis software tracks and manages inventory.

The FastFind Carousel from ARxIUM, powered by RxWorks Pro, provides a solution for pharmacies aiming to maximize medication storage and dispensing speed. It uses a pharmacy’s available vertical height to increase the number of items stored in the same footprint by up to 80%.

The carousel allows technicians to retrieve medications from a single location, and the ergonomic design minimizes bending and reaching by picking from waist height. The redundancies offered by a dual motor help reduce the amount of downtime should a motor need service.

Pharmacies can start by managing only the inventory in the carousel and expand the system over time to provide full pharmacy-wide inventory management to support even the most complex health system. The system enables the right inventory at the right place and time, while allowing staff to focus on core patient care duties.

AutoCarousel from Swisslog Healthcare, together with AutoPharm Enterprise Software, helps pharmacies reduce labor, drug waste, missing medications, and picking errors. The carousel’s vertical design ensures maximal storage in a compact footprint. Medication safety is assured with password-protected access and bar code scanning during the stocking and dispensing processes to comprehensively track the chain of custody and manage all items.

The tracking and control processes facilitated by AutoPharm can help save time involved in ordering, receiving, stocking, picking, and returning. The time saved, partnered with accurate tracking, allows pharmacies to reduce waste and inventory carrying cost. Tight inventory management promotes proper medication utilization and purchasing, ultimately providing system-wide savings.

While AutoCarousel is ideal for smaller, budget-conscious health systems using a centralized ADC-fill model relying on unit-dose medication packaging, Swisslog Healthcare offers a variety of carousel sizes to meet the needs of any pharmacy operation.
