Interest in the manual management of pharmaceutical waste continues to wane as more hospital pharmacies move to alternative approaches to address drug waste. The utilization of secure controlled substance waste systems increased sharply this year as more products have entered the market. Rx Destroyer from C2R Global Manufacturing and CsRx from Stericycle have joined Smart Sink (recently purchased by Stryker) in providing self-contained solutions for rendering pharmaceutical waste unrecoverable and unreusable. Notably, the adoption of these newer self-contained solutions was accompanied by a dip this year in the number of hospital pharmacies relying on outsourced, vendor-managed programs.
