When executed properly, environmental monitoring provides clear, actionable feedback on the effectiveness of your compounding practices—from PPE usage and product unpacking to staff compounding techniques and cleanroom cleaning activities. Given the key role monitoring serves in ensuring a high-quality compounding program and the resultant peace of mind that monitoring can deliver, it is concerning that 20% of hospital pharmacies have yet to implement an environmental monitoring program for their compounding complex. While it may be challenging and time consuming to implement and maintain a program, environmental monitoring must be prioritized, not only to demonstrate control and ensure regulatory compliance, but to uphold pharmacy’s commitment to providing patients with safe medications.
