While smart pumps are widely used and well rated by pharmacy directors, many are stymied by less than ideal data collection methods. Currently, facilities with the ability to link smart pumps to BCMA systems, utilize bidirectional wireless data transfer, and wirelessly program pumps with patient-specific data are in the minority. Nevertheless, many facilities aim to improve their wireless data transfer capabilities. Over the next 5 years, a majority expect to transfer patient-specific medication orders, library uploads, and CQI data bidirectionally via a wireless connection.
