Drawing on the results from PP&P’s 6th annual Generic Drug survey of health system pharmacy directors that analyzes issues impacting pharmacy’s generic purchasing decisions, it is clear that reliability of supply is a key determinant in sourcing generics. While the number of drugs on shortage has lessened—taking some pressure off of pharmacy departments—shortages remain a challenge. One-third of facilities struggle to assign sufficient resources (eg, FTEs, storage space) to manage ongoing shortages. Notably, the number of facilities that give high satisfaction ratings to their generic manufacturers is trending downward at a rapid rate.
Additional data from this survey is available in PP&P’s Generic Drug Supplement [www.pppmag.com/genericdrugs], published in September of this year.
