A significant investment is required to conduct proper waste management in the pharmacy—not just in terms of budget, but also of resources to develop training and education programs, as well as staying up-to-date with changing regulations. In larger facilities (ie, 200+ beds), proper waste management requires a budget commitment of approximately $100,000 per year. 

Historically, the focus on environmental stewardship tends to sharpen in flush times. Using data from PP&P’s annual Going Green survey, we see this trend holds true. The number of health systems that would consider purchasing off-contract or higher priced products to meet environmental objectives, while a majority, is not an overwhelming one.
