PP&P’s Going Green survey results demonstrate the importance of preparing for inspections of pharmacy’s environmental practices given the growth in the number of inspections occurring. Not only does this change increase pressure on pharmacy to ensure that waste practices are compliant, but resources must also be applied to ensure policies and procedures are up-to-date and documentation and reports are easily accessible.
Particular attention should be focused on the management of RCRA-regulated waste as most inspectors inquire about these practices. In a testament to pharmacy’s efforts, this increase in inspections has not resulted in increases of recommendations or citations. Notably, the largest facilities are also the most likely to have their pharmaceutical waste practices inspected.
