Unit dose packaging operations remain an integral part of most pharmacy operations, with 82% of all facilities running such a program. Managing an in-house program is decidedly the most popular approach to repackaging, although interest remains in outsourced and in-house, outsourced services among some facilities. Given the impossibility of sourcing all medications in bar coded unit dose, unit dose packaging equipment is going to remain essential to pharmacy operations for some time to come. Fortunately, many of the automated packaging products in the marketplace receive high marks giving pharmacy directors various options to ensure their medications are dispensed to the floors safely, in unit dose, and with readable bar codes.
