Many hospital pharmacies continue to struggle with the challenge of labeling syringes, ampules, inhalers, and other difficult to bar code items. Almost one quarter of facilities avoid bar coding these products altogether. This problem increases among smaller facilities: 57% of those with fewer than 200 beds are not bar coding the more difficult products. Automated solutions have yet to experience widespread adoption, as most facilities continue to rely on flag labeling.
