Medication ordering is defined by the movement toward safer electronic transmission of orders. The phenomenal growth in CPOE adoptions has benefitted facilities of all sizes, and over the next five years facilities without CPOE will become increasingly rare. Nonetheless, some facilities will continue to retain traditional systems for transmitting medication orders either as backup systems or to manage special circumstances.
