The pace of CPOE adoptions continued its whirlwind pace in 2013. The number of hospitals taking advantage of electronic ordering has passed the three-quarters mark. These adoptions have been both wide and deep: New CPOE users include facilities of all sizes and facilities sending the majority of their orders electronically also increased this year. Unfortunately, satisfaction ratings are somewhat inauspicious: Few facilities deem their system as excellent, suggesting a need for further product development. Regardless, the aggressive rate of implementations is expected to continue over the next few years, and as a result, facilities operating without CPOE soon will be anomalous.
