Commitment to compliant waste management continues to grow, despite the inherent challenges created by complicated regulations. In fact, 92% of all pharmacy directors expect their facilities to place a high priority on pharmaceutical waste management in the next five years. Creating written policies and procedures for waste practices is the norm: 83% of all facilities now have these in place. However, P&Ps are more likely to cover biohazardous, controlled substance, and hazardous waste, while fentanyl patches, RCRA-hazardous waste, and inhalers continue to pose challenges.
