The movement toward automating medication ordering processes usually provokes an increase in CPOE use and a decrease in traditional approaches, including lower utilization of physician order imaging. Even so, many facilities continue to use traditional systems for transmitting medication orders in areas of the facility where CPOE is not yet implemented. For example, facilities may use pneumatic tube systems as a back up when other systems are down, as well as for special circumstances, such as handwritten orders, pre-op medications, discharge or outpatient prescriptions, for orders from the procedural area, or when a visiting physician is inexperienced with the automation in place.
