The combination of access and control provided by automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs) make this automation very popular: 87% of all facilities use ADCs and satisfaction rates remain very high. In fact, more than half of hospitals rely on ADCs to serve as their primary means of drug distribution. Nonetheless, implementation challenges remain: few hospitals have managed to institute profiling for all of their cabinets and those using bar code verification during the restocking process also remain in the minority. Given that pharmacy directors drive ADC purchasing and that most facilities are considering additional adoptions along with expansions of current capacity, this is an excellent opportunity for pharmacy directors to work with their vendors to ensure that best practices can be implemented in every ADC facility-wide.
