The costs associated with ineffective drug storage are significant—be it staff time spent checking on refrigerator doors left ajar or the loss of expensive vaccines due to a refrigerator malfunction. The strong return on investment from commercial-grade refrigerators should make these purchases self-evident. Nonetheless, results from this year’s State of Pharmacy Automation survey demonstrate that while popular in the pharmacy, commercial refrigerators are used inconsistently on patient units. Proper pharmaceutical storage is no less important outside of the pharmacy, and given the lack of pharmacist oversight available on the units, it could be argued that dependable drug storage is just as essential outside of the pharmacy.

Watch for additional data on refrigeration and temperature monitoring in PP&P’s State of Pharmacy Automation issue this August.
