The need for more education on compliant waste practices is evident. The number of facilities receiving citations remains low; however, more than one third of all hospitals have received recommendations to improve their practices. Furthermore, inspections are common, although the size of the institution does seem to affect which regulatory body inspects it: state boards of pharmacy are most likely to inspect the smallest facilities, while the EPA and state environmental agencies are more likely to inspect mid- to large-size facilities.
