The commitment to cradle-to-grave waste management has yet to be adopted by the majority of health systems, although 65% of facilities agree that it is the correct approach to establish. Some progress has been made in managing RCRA-hazardous drugs; 53% of facilities are now correctly managing this waste (including insulin, barium contrast media, and flu vaccine with preservative waste) via RCRA-hazardous containers, up from 47% last year. Given the multiple challenges in achieving compliance, it is not surprising that there is a growing reliance on consultants, vendors, and waste management providers to assist pharmacy in these onerous tasks.

Watch for additional data on current waste management practices in upcoming issues of PP&P.
