With just months to go until the new chapter becomes enforceable, there is significant pressure on pharmacy to close compliance gaps. Adding to this pressure is the fact that the vast majority of state boards of pharmacy have adopted this chapter and will also inspect to its requirements. While pharmacy is strongly committed to working toward compliance, most facilities have a long way to go. Fewer than one-third of all hospital pharmacies are confident that they are fully compliant with the new requirements. Given that after more than a decade under the initial version of <797>, 24% of facilities still have yet to reach full compliance, it is likely that the November 1, 2023 deadline will be missed by many facilities.
Facilities continue to progress toward <797>-compliant practices. While more than three-quarters of hospital pharmacies are confident that their operations are fully compliant with the current (2008) version of the chapter, just 31% express that same confidence with the revised chapter despite the looming November deadline.
Conducting a gap analysis is key to identifying and prioritizing the necessary steps for achieving compliant practices.

While 96% of facilities report meeting most or all of the current <797> (2008 version) requirements, the reported compliance numbers for the revised chapter are less impressive: fewer than one-third are confident that they are fully compliant and one-quarter have yet to make any significant progress.
