A well-planned outpatient pharmacy service can result in revenue increases, improved patient care, and enhanced employee benefits. Hospital facilities continue to recognize this value, with 38% of facilities operating such a service in 2013. Facility size has a distinct influence on the likelihood of a facility offering outpatient services, as does location: Large urban hospitals currently are the most likely to operate outpatient pharmacies. Moving forward, existing outpatient operations are projected to expand rapidly: Facilities of all sizes plan to offer additional outpatient services, and this trend will be particularly prevalent among the largest hospitals.
