Smart pump adoption is widespread with 83% of all facilities using these pumps at the bedside. In the ongoing effort to optimize this technology, there is strong interest in bidirectional wireless data transfer. However, upgrading to bidirectional data transfer has been a challenge for many facilities and has yet to become a majority practice. As facilities consider updating their smart pumps, most are reviewing two to three different vendors before making a final decision.
While smart pumps maintain an impressive 96% satisfaction rating, only 15% of users assign an Excellent rating to their systems, suggesting future improvements would be welcomed by users.
While the vast majority (84%) of facilities take advantage of wireless data transfer, unidirectional data transfer remains common. Just over 4 out of every 10 facilities are currently transferring data to and from their smart pumps via a bidirectional interface.
Smart pump users typically invest in building a drug library that is specific to their operation, although customized versions of vendor-provided drug libraries are also popular.
