While no two pharmacy spaces are identical, they all require the same basic design elements: functionality and an efficient workflow. The space must be designed to support the intended workflow and to minimize staff movement, which is especially important given the current staffing challenges many pharmacies are struggling to address.

Consider the impact that storage plays in improving workflow efficiency. For example, retrieving items from distant bulk storage is time-consuming; conversely, custom designed storage within the workspace that simplifies product access can deliver time savings by minimizing steps. Utilize dual-purpose spaces where possible, while also ensuring that counter heights match the intended activities for that space. Include segregated, but accessible, storage space for products that require special handling, such as narcotic storage and Sudafed products in the outpatient pharmacy.

Because it is impossible to overstate the value of beauty in design, installing an attractive workspace can help emphasize that your staff is valued. Consider design features that impact staff satisfaction and thus, staff retention: a dedicated meeting room space, quiet workspaces for tasks that require focus, staff lockers to avoid clutter, and so forth.

Ensure that the designer understands the workflow of the facility, state and national regulations, and the specific needs of the pharmacy. From the initial design to the final layout, a knowledgeable partner in pharmacy design is essential. Ask your vendor if they provide 3D drawings, as this will help you visualize the space in relation to workflow. Further, review the impact of lighting, ensure the design is ADA compliant, and consider the impact on cleaning and disinfecting practices. The following Buyer’s Guide includes several views of vendors in the pharmacy and cleanroom renovation and design space, helping you select the partner that can best serve your pharmacy’s needs.
