The provision of bar coded unit dose medications continues to be integral to most medication safety initiatives, but the methods by which these medications are prepared remain varied. There is a general desire to outsource a significant portion of this process going forward, but the exemplary reviews given to in-house, automated packaging technology, combined with the persistent number of products that require manual packaging, point toward a continued dependence on in-house packaging operations.
