Given the often inconsistent availability of medications in bar coded unit dose, it is not surprising that outsourced repackaging benefitted from an increase this year. While the number of mid-sized facilities (201-400 beds) relying on outsourcing remained flat this year, more of the smaller and larger facilities added outsourcing to their repackaging approach. Most facilities utilize outsourcing as a supplement to repackaging in-house, sending less than 10% of their repackaging to outsourcers. However, given pharmacy’s satisfaction with their outsourcers and the desire to move staff away from rote distributive functions, almost half of those currently outsourcing plan to increase their outgoing volume over the next three years.
